The award is presented annually, in recognition of outstanding partnership/support from a community agency or business over an extended period of years or through a significant initiative that has directly benefited Ottawa-Carleton District School Board students.

Congratulations!  It is the staffs work with the students and the relationships that staff have built and maintained with school staff over the years that has made Pathways such a well regarded program in the eyes of our partner.

Crime Prevention Ottawa hosted its 7th annual Community Safety Awards November 2, 2015, to celebrate individuals, programs and groups making out-standing contributions to the safety of our community.

Tammy Corner was recognized by Crime Prevention Ottawa for her exceptional work as a leader in safety and crime prevention. Tammy has been contributing to building healthier and safer communities in Ottawa for more than 15 years, first as a Community House Coordinator and then as PQ’s Health Promoter. During this period she has played a key role in the development and implementation of the Safe People, United Neighbours and Levers of Change Projects and has contributed to many city-wide initiatives including developing the guide for “Creating the Change We Want,” which is now being used to engage and train resident leaders across the city. One of Tammy’s greatest strengths is her ability to engage and support residents. She has a unique ability to see the best in everyone and to reflect people’s strengths and capacities back to them. She works with residents where they are, and builds deep relation-ships of trust both between herself and her participants as well within the groups she’s leading. She is a connector of people and instinctively builds community through every activity in which she’s involved.

In this spirit of community, Tammy feels strongly that this award should be shared with the many people who have contributed to the work of the Safe People, United Neighbors and UNLOC Projects and to other initiatives, big and small, that have helped to make our communities safer, healthier and stronger.

Expectant moms in the Ottawa region will soon benefit from a new birth centre, scheduled to open summer 2013.

The Ottawa Birth and Wellness Centre will provide mothers-to-be and their families with a broad range of programs and services led by midwives, with special attention to meeting the needs of the Francophone population. The centre expects to assist with 450-500 births each year, offering more choice as to where women can deliver healthy babies, while helping to keep hospital beds free to focus on high-risk births.

Creating midwife-led birth centres is part of the McGuinty government’s Action Plan for Health Care and its commitment to providing Ontarians with the right care, at the right time, in the right place.

On Valentine’s Day 2013, Councillor Mathieu Fleury, a member of the Board of Health, and Dr. Vera Etches, Associate Medical Officer of Health, launched Ottawa Public Health’s (OPH) Sex it Smart youth condom campaign in Eaton Court at the Rideau Centre.

The Sex it Smart campaign aims to increase awareness of proper condom use and its importance in reducing the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) through improved condom distribution and better promotion of healthy sexual relationships among youth.

“Youth played an essential role in the creation and implementation of this campaign,” said Councillor Fleury. “Youth were involved in developing a plan, designing the logo as well as the campaign’s ‘look and feel’. This is an important and exciting campaign for our city.”

A key component of the campaign is its website, where organizations and residents can now order free condoms online. The sexitsmart.ca website is also mobile friendly and features an Ottawa condom finder, STI prevention and proper condom use messaging.
