From Volunteerism to Employment: Transitional Program for Internationally Trained Professionals  

The From Volunteerism to Employment Program is an innovative program for New Canadians with professional training outside of Canada, who has had challenges accessing the Canadian job market in their field. Through job shadowing, mentoring and reflection, the program is designed to develop knowledge, skills and experience related to professional practice in Canada. The program is returning for its second year, after a successful first year which saw six of fourteen Internationally Trained Professionals gain employment with the support of the program.  

The program is designed to support Internationally Trained Professionals in: 

  • Acquiring work experience in their field of expertise
  • Developing social and professional networks and relationships
  • Learning workplace culture, expectations and professional practices
  • Learning and practicing professional language related to their field of expertise
  • Accessing information regarding accreditation regulations, training and upgrading opportunities

The program will support Internationally Trained Professionals through the following activities:

  • Job shadowing placements (2 weeks)
  • Job mentoring placements (up to 3 months - 12 hours/week)
  • Training/workshops
  • Peer support programs (2 hours/bi-weekly)
  • Evaluation and follow-up

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS

For consideration, applicants should possess the following qualifications:

  • Have qualifications outside Canada in one of the following professions:
    • Social Work
    • Research
    • Community Development
    • Health Care Practitioners
    • Health Promotion
    • Counseling
    • Finance
    • Information Technology (IT)
    • Human Resources
    • Office Administration
    • Data Entry
    • Early Childhood Education/Teaching
    • Occupational Therapy
  • Have been in Canada five (5) years or less.
  • Have no Canadian experience in their profession.
  • Have a minimum of two years experience outside of Canada in their profession.
  • Have working ability in English – both spoken and written (5 to 6 benchmark level).
  • Be able to commit to 12 hours a week for up to three months.
  • Be able to participate in a 2 hour bi-weekly peer support program.
  • Be highly motivated and committed.
